I spent a greater portion of my business career in the photography industry. In my letters and marketing materials I repeated the time worn phrase, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Now that we are living in a video world, the common person has nearly as many ways to capture the moments of their lives as Jim Carrey’s Truman Bank character in The Truman Show. Today, a video is worth 10,000 words.

Online video advertising is giving marketers another opportunity to reach targeted audiences with their messages. According to Borrell Associates, streaming audio and video ads now account for 19 percent of local online revenue and will rise to 59% by 2013.

Most marketers are having hard time thinking about adding video to their marketing tool chest for one reason: because in their mind, it’s still a very expensive and time-consuming marketing tool. They also have little to no experience with it, so they avoid it.

You can choose from a number of online firms that help you develop your online video for as little as $250.  Jivox.com gives you the tools to put a video ad together within 10 minutes and then target who you want the ad to be seen by.  It’s remarkably easy to do.  Another Mixpo.com allows you to create in-banner ads and add in interactive capabilities.  Even Google has emerging video advertising opportunities.

There are three ways I look at video advertising for small- to medium-sized business:

  1. Pay other web sites to place your video ad.
  2. Put the video ad on your website.
  3. Put it on YouTube and other video sites

With the first option, you need to make sure you are placing your video ad on Web sites with customer profiles that match yours. This requires a bit of research, and you need to carefully follow up to analyze the results.

With the third option, you’ll want to make sure you tag it properly to increase the number of potential hits.

Three techniques to get your video viewed!

You really only have fifteen- to thirty-seconds to get your message across in a video ad.  Consumers’ attention spans are short. You can build your strategy around this emerging trend without offending your prospective customers.

Depending on your company and what you want to achieve, here are a three different ways you can encourage consumers to view your video:

  • Offer a free white paper, but require the person to watch a thirty-second video promotion or testimonial.
  • Offer a 10% discount if they watch your video. At the end of the video you can offer a coupon code which will prove they watched the video
  • Develop a contest that requires the participants to view your video
